What is copy trading and how does it work

KoreSignal6 min read

Copying another trader sounds simple: they trade and your account does the same. But there are three very different ways to do it, each with its own costs and risks.

Copy trading means automatically copying another person's trades into your own account. When that trader buys, your account buys; when they close, yours closes. You decide who to follow and with how much money; the platform or tool you use does the execution.

It sounds simple, and partly it is. What almost nobody explains at the start is that there are three very different ways to copy trade, and that the result depends far more on who you copy and how you control risk than on the tool.

The three kinds of copy trading

1. On a platform or broker. Platforms like eToro, Binance and many forex brokers have a section where you pick a trader from their list and copy them with one click. It is the easiest way. In exchange, you can only copy people inside that platform and trade with that broker, and the fees are usually built into the spread or taken as a share of profits.

2. With MetaTrader signals. MetaTrader 4 and 5 have their own signals service: you subscribe to a provider and their trades are copied into your account. It works with many brokers, but you pay a monthly subscription per provider.

3. Copying Telegram signal channels. Many traders post their trades in Telegram channels: entry, stop loss and targets. Copying them by hand is slow and makes you late. A signal copier takes them to your own MetaTrader account, with the broker you already use. We cover how this differs from platform copy trading in Telegram vs platform copy trading.

How it works, step by step

  1. You pick who to copy. A trader on a platform, a MetaTrader provider or a Telegram channel.
  2. You decide the size. A fixed amount per trade or a percentage of your account. This is the step most people get wrong, because the trader's account is not yours.
  3. You set your limits. How much you are willing to lose per trade and per day.
  4. Trades are copied automatically. You review the results and adjust.

What it costs

It depends on the kind. On platforms it often looks free, but you pay through the spread or a share of profits. On MetaTrader you pay a subscription per provider. With Telegram, many channels have a paid VIP group, and the tool to copy it charges separately. Always compare the total monthly cost with the size of your account: on small accounts, fees can eat a large part of the profit.

The real risks

Copy trading does not remove the risk of trading: it moves it to the person you copy. The risks we see most often are:

  • Copying results that are not real. Some channels delete their losing signals so their history looks perfect. We measured it in channels that delete their losing signals.
  • A high win rate that loses money. A trader can win 8 out of 10 trades and still lose, if the 2 bad ones are much bigger than the 8 good ones.
  • A size that doesn't fit your account. Copying the same lot as someone with an account ten times bigger is the fastest way to lose.
  • No brake. Without a daily loss limit, the trader's bad day becomes your bad month.

How to start without risking money

  1. Test before you pay. Follow the trader or channel for two to four weeks with no real money: on a demo account or in simulation. Step by step in how to test a signal channel.
  2. Start small. When you go live, use the minimum size for the first month.
  3. Set a daily limit. Decide today how much you can lose in a day and always respect it.
  4. Review every month. If the real results don't look like what you were shown, stop copying.

If what you want to copy are Telegram channels, the KoreSignal Telegram signal copier takes them to your MetaTrader 4 or 5 with your own loss limits, and has a free 7-day trial in simulation, no card needed.

FAQ

What is copy trading in simple words?

It is automatically copying another trader's trades into your account. They buy and your account buys; they close and your account closes. You choose who to follow, with how much money and how much you are willing to lose.

Is copy trading good for beginners?

It can be, as long as the beginner understands that copying does not remove risk. The sensible path is to test first with no real money, start with the minimum size and have a daily loss limit.

Can you make money with copy trading?

Yes, if you copy someone who wins consistently and you control your risk. But many traders and channels only show their wins, so it is key to check the full history, losses included, before putting money in.

What is the difference between copy trading and trading signals?

With signals, someone posts their trades and you decide whether to copy them. With copy trading, the copying is automatic. A signal copier joins both: it takes the signals a channel posts and copies them into your account by itself.
